Unit23 Skatepark, Scotland - The New Ramps

by Dave Sowerby

The guys at Unit 23 Skatepark in Dumbarton, Scotland have been hard at work over the winter rebuilding Hall 2. Check what it has to offer now that it is complete and open to ride!

Unit 23 Skatepark in Dumbarton, Scotland, has been going strong since 2002 and has become an important part of the Scottish BMX scene. The guys there are always keen to keep the park fresh making regular alterations to introduce new and challenging ramps to ride, but the last few months has seen one of the biggest overhauls of the park since it opened. With the financial support that Nike 6.0 provided to help make the park alterations, Dave Sowerby was tasked with designing a new layout for Hall 2 in the park. The plan was to keep two of the main ramps already in place in the hall, the mini ramp bowl and huge rail bank, and then design a new ramp layout around these to make the most of the space.

With a wild new design in place the guys at Unit23 then got to work making this vision a reality over November and December last year. The changes to the hall are now complete and ready to ride and add to what was already an amazing park. Check out the photos below to see the new ramp features and some riding shots from the park too.

Props to them mate. Anybody in involved in local governments need to see this. Aint no point building expensive concrete outdoor parks. Put an old warehouse to good use for once guys. (speaking from experience with my local council, who say they want to promote cycling...).

Agree. Best part about indoor parks. No humid weather can mess it up so people have a consistent nice place to ride.
Love the setup. Wish I had one locally.

^ ur so lucky haha but ya great job on the park so well done, and love the point of using old warehouses. rays is the best example, old world war 2 wasrehouses that have been sitting vacant now going into great use in clevland. local government should take note on that.

ANNND you can slide on wood. Sliding on concrete just isn't the same for some reason. Possibly ripped pants, f*cked up face/elbows/hands/knees/back, and overall inability to slide?

The Australian Government waste enough of tax payers money on crap.aND I AM SURE WE ARE NOT THE ONLY COUNTRY THAT DOES THIS!!!!! Why not invest some money in the kids and build a massive indoor skate / bike park in major cities around AUSTRALIA, we sure as hell need some where safe to ride in a controlled environment, where the trails don't change like dirt does. I ride DH, Dirt jump etc, and i really enjoy it but even then there isn't many places to ride.... but an indoor place would be excellent because of the weather factor. It could be run by riders for riders. A warehouse is such a great idea, we see them popping up all around the us and canada because the Irding seen there is massive, why can't this positive biking disease spread around.....COME ON SHOW YOUR SUPPORT!!!!!!

Well said Danmaran, especially for an ozzie, jk. Razz. Plywood is a bit expensive. My dad is a builder so he gets it pretty cheap and he has to pay $29.22 for 7mm, $47.46 for 9mm and $51.82 for 12mm thick ply a piece. All sheets 2400mm x 1200mm untantalized. So it would add up. I do think though, that it would be possible to design a wooden park like a jigsaw, so that features can be moved around. Isn't Joyride a bit like that? Another prob is some land owners expect exorbitant lease rates, so much so thriving gym's can't make money in their warehouse... I do think we can get a lot of these going if enough of us get involved.

The new rhythm section (bottom wall in the 1st 3d render) is worth the price of admission alone.
